DPP day 2: Festive Fail #1

Yesterday I tried to make fruit mince pies to take to an afternoon tea. It was a complete disaster, and I am never doing it again. Now I have to work through all the disasters all by myself - no one else in my family eats them and they are not fit to give away!

Have you had any kitchen mishaps lately?

  1. Oh, invite me around, I'll eat them!

    Kitchen mishaps?

A chocolate cake that didn't really rise? But we've slapped green icing and red sprinkles on it and the boys are eating it anyway.

Vegetables served up with ice on them...and meat that hadn't fully cooked.

    It happens! Take heart.

  2. I have had plenty in the past. But give me a few days and I'll have something current to share. I've never had a mince pie and I'm not sure I'd like it, but your photo looks like blueberry to me and I'm all about that! :)

  3. Remember my chocolate cake with too much bicarb at Ryan's Rd. Yuck. Only fit for the bin.

    Glad I taste tested.

  4. Not long after we got married I was going to cook one of those rolled up meat things where you tie it up with string. Except I couldn't find cotton twine and thought the plastic would work just as well.

In recent my biggest mistakes have been because of all the new ingredients I am cooking with. Here are some tips: coconut milk DOES NOT make good mac and cheese. Don't double a quick bread recipe when you are experimenting with making it gluten-free and egg-free. It IS possible to print out a recipe 3 times and somehow manage to leave a different ingredient or 2 off each one.

  5. My Aunt makes a scottish black bun every Christmas. When Emma was three years old I thought it would be a nice tradition to establish in our family and I made one - It was perfect and delicious... the only trouble was that Austin didn't like it, Emma wouldn't touch it(hates anything fruitcake-like) and the only visitor I tried it on was very polite but didn't like it either. The thought of eating it all myself was very daunting and I slowly worked my way through it over weeks. Finally my mum arrived and I found her in the kitchen eating it, saying, "I found this in the cupboard, it's great! I hope you didn't mind that I ate some!"

I really feel for you having to eat all your fruit mince pies yourself!
